Facebook Search Engine To Be Unveiled Instead Of Facebook Phone With HTC?

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Today's Facebook event, set for 10 a.m., PST, has a lot of tech enthusiasts and analysts trying to figure out what exactly Facebook will be unveiling.
As you can see from a copy of the invite, there aren't many hints or hidden clues, like there have been in Apple invites for highly anticipated media events for the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. Many have anticipated the unveiling of the long-rumored Facebook phone, which the social media giant has reportedly been working on in secret with HTC. Others suggest that there could be a new update to the newsfeed/timeline feature on Facebook, which will certainly cause some backlash among their users. At iDigitalTimes, we wrote that it might be a press event to address the drastic fall in users since "terms-of-service-gate" for the popular mobile app, Instagram. We also wrote that it could focus on the company improving their ad-revenue, which should help bolster their stock after their abysmal IPO in early 2012. Considering how volatile the company's stock is, it's important that Zuckerberg and Co. don't over-hype their event but, according to recent reports, today's event might actually be revolutionary.
According to the UK's Daily Mail, Facebook might release a search engine to rival Google. They wrote that analysts at Pocket Lint said the decision is a "no-brainer."
"If Facebook were to allow users to quickly search the social network and beyond for example, it could cause major headaches for Google: the new feature would give Facebook users a reason to bypass Google altogether,' said Pocket Lint."
It's a brilliant idea for a company that's lost a lot of value since it went public, and continues to suffer, both fiscally and in PR. Between the Instagram debacle and Zuckerbergs sister accidentally making a private family photo public, it's clear Facebook has a lot of privacy issues. Still, a brand new search engine by Facebook could revitalize the company. That being said, it's certainly a risky business move. There is a reason that there are very few search engines available; Google has a stranglehold on the market. But, considering how much easier it would be for Facebook users to search for something by typing in their Facebook search bar instead of going to Google, the social media behemoth has a chance of making a search engine work for them. It would also appease their investors, who have been worried about the company's revenue stream and overall business model.
