A CHEAPER IPHONE

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Also, rumours doing the rounds this week include those of a slicker BlackBerry and a lighter Lumia.
The biggest rumour this year is undoubtedly Apple’s long-speculated "cheaper" iPhone. With major news sources quoting minor unnamed sources about the existence of such a device, it’s hard to ascertain the strength of this rumour. On the one hand, you do have the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg backing it pretty hard. But on the other hand, you have Apple’s Phil Schiller denying the rumour outright.

Apple has denied the existence of rumoured products in the past too. Those who’ve run with the rumour say Apple could end up recycling some old parts into a new phone, making it cheaper to manufacture, but still offering it at a cheaper price. Except Apple sort of already does this with their older iPhone models, currently the 4 and 4S. Could Apple be planning something cheaper? Something in the vicinity of mid-range Android and Windows Phones? You might say it’s unlikely, but then that’s what everyone said about the iPad Mini. And look at how that turned out.

On the other end of the spectrum, RIM’s hopes for a resurgence in the premium segment lies squarely on the upcoming Z10. If you thought you’d seen what BlackBerry will look like in 2013, think again. A German website has posted an in-depth look at the Z10, exploring the phone’s hardware and new user interface. Everything seems to be working perfectly which is surprising considering the Z10 supposedly houses a dual-core processor. This early look bodes well for RIM, as does their reported 15,000 app submissions in fewer than two days.

If you’re a fan of the Lumia, but not of its polycarbonate construction, Nokia might be coming out with just the phone for you. Sources have revealed to the Verge that Nokia will be releasing a follow-up to the Lumia 920 that will feature an aluminium shell intended to make the phone lighter and sturdier. Nokia’s no stranger to the material, which the Symbian-powered N8 was made of in luminous colours of its own. The 920’s successor is rumoured be part of a duo of devices to be released later this year by Nokia.
