50 COOLEST GADGETS: SOUNDS GOOD

Sunday, January 20, 2013

If you’re going to claim to be an audiophile, be sure you know about these
B&O car audio
The bad news first: the only way to get a B&O system in your car is if you buy an Audi, Aston Martin, BMW or AMG-powered Mercedes. That said, when it comes to seamless hardware integration with powerful sound, few do it better than the Danish hi-fi behemoth. In some models, you can get the “Advanced Sound System – Second Generation”, with up to 19 speakers producing a possible 1,400 watts of clean, clear sound. Let’s just say that with this system even Skrillex’s most extreme tracks will sound tolerable.
Price on request; available as an option on select Audi, Aston Martin, BMW and Mercedes-Benz models.
Steinway Lyngdorf Model D
Not to be confused with Steinway’s Model D grand piano, this system’s 6’9” tall speakers make a statement even before you push play – much like the stateliness of Steinway’s pianos. First: Choose chrome or gold details and a wooden or black lacquer finish to complement your home décor. Then, slide in a CD and let the expertise of Danish music system manufacturer Lyngdorf take over as exquisite sound streams through the giant speakers.
Approx Rs 1.04 crore; steinwaylyngdorf.com
Audio Research Reference 250 Monoaural Amplifier
The Audio Research 250 Amp is sort of like that quiet, well-dressed chap standing in a corner through the party. He’s low-profile, converses with people in quiet tones and when you finally get around to introducing yourself, you’re stunned by his incisive, astute conversation. “Sound emerges from an inky black background, revealing microdetails and performance cues typically reserved for a live performance,” goes the company spiel. We agree.
Approx Rs 15 lakh per pair; audiovisionindia.com
Cessaro Gamma 1 Speakers
The annual High End Audio Show in Munich brings together the biggest names in the industry. This year, the Cessaro Gamma 1, a five-way horn speaker, stole the show. The incredible sound that comes out of the solidwood horns – which only use four watts of amplifier power – is loud enough to shake an entire stadium. The only thing that can muzzle its sound is its price tag.
Approx Rs 5 crore; cessaro.de
Brionvega Achille Castiglioni Radio Fonografo RR226
Besides lending the clean and simple lines of his pen to cutlery, lamps, watches and furniture, Italian designer Achille Castiglioni (who died in 2002) also made this amazing music system. It not only adds a broad stroke of retro-cool to your den, but also plays CDs, vinyl, radio or any external source you can plug in with standard RCA cables. Only 300 pieces are available, so don’t take too long to decide if you’re in the market for one of these.
Approx Rs 4.3 lakh; connox.com
