2013'S BIGGEST TECH RUMOURS

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Sony, RIM, Apple and Samsung all have some leaks and that are already getting us all excited.
The advent of leaks this past week promises that 2013 will be an interesting year in smartphone technology. Two "leaked" official images, hosted on Sony’s website, provide a front view of the Sony devices rumoured to be launched on January 7. The phone codenamed Odin will officially be the Xperia ZL, while the Yuga, which we got a closer look at a couple of weeks ago, will be the Xperia Z.

From the looks of it, the ZL will be the higher positioned device, though more is known about the Z, which is purported to have a 5-inch 1080p screen and a quad-core processor. The one certified bit of information we can garner from the leaked photo of the ZL, is that the front facing camera has been placed in the bottom right corner and not on the left of the earpiece as in the Z.

Another image leaked is that of a live shot of three BlackBerry devices possibly in line for a release this year. One of the three has been seen before, the QWERTY N-series, which looks like a high-end device meant for hardware keyboard enthusiasts. Of the two never-before-seen devices, one has a hardware keyboard and a colour scheme (and keys) reminiscent of the HTC ChaCha. This looks like it could be the next entry-level device from RIM. The touchscreen device pictured in the leaked shot is missing the two plastic strips seen in the leaked images of the L-series device. Could RIM be planning an entry-level touchscreen as well? We should know by the end of this month.

Two rumours that have very little weight behind them (for different reasons) have popped up regarding Samsung’s and Apple’s next flagship phones. First the latter, because it’s hardly news: Apple is supposedly testing the iPhone 6, as well as iOS7, according to one online publication. This has been surmised from the presence of an IP address within Cupertino. While lacking any substantial information, this rumour is a little obvious. Apple tests their devices for years before releasing them — iOS Maps being the possible exception — so why wouldn’t they be testing their next phone and OS upgrade?

The newest rumour about Samsung’s next Galaxy S device puts an S-Pen into the flagship phone. While we’re fans of the S-Pen’s performance on the Note II, and admit its potential, it seems like one of two major differences between the Note and S lines of devices, the other being their size. Putting an S-Pen in the Galaxy S4 would just blur the lines between the two, unless the next iteration of the Galaxy Note crosses over to the tablet side, and is a six- to seven-inch device.
