12 geek movies to see before the 2013 summer blockbusters

Sunday, January 20, 2013

Iron Man 3 opens the 2013 summer blockbuster season on May 3rd. This season (as with a few in the past decade) appears to be loaded with geek-favoring titles that should keep the trend of Hollywood success going strong this summer, but one does not have to wait four months to get their geeky fix in at the cinema. Here are 12 movies due out over the next few months to keep us occupied until summer.

Hansel and Gretel Witch HuntersJanuary 25

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton play the grown up variations of the child heroes. They got their taste of witch blood early. Now they’ve taken their skills to a whole new level.

John Dies at the EndJanuary 25

This one looks pretty weird. Then again, when has weird stopped true geeks from giving it a shot. In a world where a new street drug is doing more to people than just making them high, a couple of college dropouts have to do what they can to save the world. Or maybe not.

Warm BodiesFebruary 1

Zombies and geeks go hand in hand, and while the comedy zombie genre has been well done in recent years with Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead, there’s still room for another winner. What if love can bring zombies back to the world of the living? We’ll find out in this movie.

Side EffectsFebruary 8

It doesn’t look like a typical geek movie, but as crime dramas go, it seems to have just enough strange twists and turns possible to make it worthwhile. Then again, it might be another in a long line of cheesy crime dramas that Hollywood has been putting out recently. This is the iffiest one of the group.

Escape from Planet EarthFebruary 14

It’s one of the hardest days of the year for many geeks. Valentine’s Day is filled with people having fun with their significant others while many of us settle for anything but a romantic comedy on HBO. Fear not – go animated on Valentine’s Day with a 3D animated geek fest featuring the voices of Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, and James Gandolfini.

Dark SkiesFebruary 22

Forgive the opening when they discuss an “epic game of Modern Warfare” and “save buttons”. It gets better from there. This is an alien/demon abduction movie from the producer ofParanormal Activity may be a sleeper geek hit.

Jack the Giant SlayerMarch 1

The tale of Jack and the Bean Stalk comes to the big screen in this live action interpretation of the classic tale. It might be too fantastic to be good, but the thing that gives us hope is that it’s written by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie.

Oz the Great and PowerfulMarch 8

Sam Raimi and Disney tackle the origins of The Wizard of Oz with an exploration into how the wizard went from earth to the fantasy world of Oz. The flying monkeys are already there waiting for him.

G.I. Joe: RetaliationMarch 29

First, Channing Tatum wasn’t big enough (apparently) to carry the story into a sequel. They brought in Dwayne Johnson to give it more muscle and Bruce Willis to give it more star power. Then, upon seeing the initial trailer last year and subsequent test screenings that showed Tatum getting killed off in the beginning, fans screamed. They reworked the movie to bring the star of the first part back into play more, though it’s uncertain whether he survives or dies later, but the trailer seems to suggest he plays a part in the action. This may be another disaster, even bigger than the first movie, but it needs to be mentioned just in case.

The HostMarch 29

Sci-fi love stories normally don’t end well. It’s one of the hardest mixed genres to do right and this one may have enough creativity and grit to pull it off.

OblivionApril 19

Tom Cruise is at it again with another futuristic sci-fi adventure. If he can bring what he brought to Minority Report and not Vanilla Sky, this has a chance to be a winner.

Iron Man 3May 3

This is it. The summer blockbuster season begins with this big hit. The only question is whether or not it can beat it’s two extremely successful predecessors.
