MSI has not been pretty
successful lately with its portable devices, but its looking to change the game
with the recent launch of Slidebook S20 which is a fusion of an Ultrabook and
Tablet that runs on the latest and greatest Windows 8 OS.We just had the opportunity to
get some hands-on time with MSI's latest creation, the S20 Slidebook. This
ultra light (2.3 pounds / 1kg) and thin (0.78-inches / 19.8mm) convertible
Ultrabook runs Windows 8 (of course) and packs an Intel Core i5 processor (Ivy Bridge ),
4GB RAM and a 128GB mSATA SSD. In front, you'll find a gorgeous 11.6-inch
1920x1080-pixel IPS display with a 10-point capacitive multitouch layer plus an
HD front-facing camera. This glass panel is surrounded by a glossy white
plastic bezel that incorporates the MSI logo and the Windows button.
The back cover is made of a
silver magnesium alloy with matching plastic antenna covers for the built-in
WiFi b/g/n, WiDi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios. Most of the ports are on the right
edge along with the power-lock key and LED indicators -- this includes the
power input, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, a mini-HDMI output and a pair of
USB 3.0 connectors. The back edge is home to the SD card readers, orientation
lock button and volume rocker.
The Slidebook S20, an “ideal
mobile work station and leisure companion” that is a full-featured ultrabook in
a convertible tablet's body.It isn't even the standard convertible form factor.
Rather than a hinge with a 360 degree rotation capability, the device, as its name
implies, has a sliding cover. up to 8 GB of DDR3 RAM can be installed (random
access memory), along with a solid-state drive (SSD) of 64 GB or 128 GB
capacity.
Two USB 3.0 ports allow for peripherals to be connected, or for flash
drives and the like to transfer files. MSI also tossed in Gigabit Ethernet,
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 support, a mini HDMI connector and audio jacks. As for the
11.6-inch LCD itself (liquid crystal display), it has a resolution of 1920 x
1080 pixels (Full HD) and touch input support (10-finger tracking). It can be
slid out from over the keyboard and used at any angle, the company claims. Needless
to say, Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is installed on the MSI
Slidebook S20.
